What is CarbonGardening®?

CarbonGardening® is concerned with understanding the Carbon footprint associated with gardening products, and provides solutions that actively assist gardeners in their efforts to be Carbon Neutral or Carbon Negative and reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and improve their soil carbon bank.

CarbonGardening® promotes the recovery of organic materials that for generations have been lost through waste and buried in landfills. If buried in landfill, this valuable organic material degrades in a manner that generates over 3% of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

The goal is not only to avoid products that carry a negative greenhouse load, but to actively use products that are Carbon positive and quantify the carbon emmissions associated with different gardening products and practices.. This allows gardeners to actively participate in the minimisation of greenhouse gas emissions at an individual level.

Knowing Your Carbon Footprint

Although many people are concerned about the growing environmental impact mankind is having on the planet, it is often difficult to find practical ways to reverse the trend.

The term ‘Carbon Footprint’ has gained common use to help us understand our individual impact upon the environment. ‘Carbon Footprint’ quantifies this impact in terms of our greenhouse gas emissions. The Australian Greenhouse Office suggests that the average Australian household generates about 14 tonnes of greenhouse gases every year. This is a bi-product of using everyday products and services such as electricity, water and your motor car.

Comparative carbon ratings on products enable consumers to distinguish between othwerwise similar products, and to make more informed purchasing decisions to select products that contribute to a lower carbon footprint.
